I'm actually in the process of moving these reviews to a standalone blog (I didn't realize at the time that I would end up reviewing online glasses so exhaustively). I just got my new Rx, too, so maybe some additional reviews to come. I definitely learned a lot in the process, and the number one thing was not being afraid to say "no" to bad service. Looking back at it now, it wasn't always smooth sailing buying online, but I felt that even with if I had to do a return, the process was preferable to being rushed and bullied in a store. And no one was trying to trick me into believing the materials (frames or lenses) were worth 10xs their actual value. Glasses are so important! Do let me know if you have any questions or requests for reviews and I'll see if I can help. Given my strong prescription I've always been pressured (bullied?) into using brick & mortar opticians, but after spending comically large sums on a parade of unwearable and sometimes unreturnable glasses, often served with a heap of condescension and/or indignation, it's clearly time to switch gears. The obvious labor you've put into this tome has me seriously optimistic for the first time in decades.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15467939379217238038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3812835806784023629.post-56194919486343572092015-02-21T14:45:41.937-05:002015-02-21T14:45:41.937-05:00Thanks so much for your thorough reviews. I wanted to get some plastic frames when I went to my last eye doc appt and the girl kept shooting down all the pairs I liked and ending up talking me into a pair that were too big for my face. They looked ok the 3 minutes I wore them at the office, but once I paid $400 for them and got them home, I hated them. Too big and too dark. Luckily, they let me return them and I got a cheaper pair of wire frames, but I still had to pay just as much once you add the lenses. And I still don't have plastic frames!
I started looking at Warby Parker and have done the In Home Try On and found a frame I like but still wasn't sure if I would get a good pair of glasses or not. I usually wear contacts, so my glasses are mostly for evening before bed, so I am hoping the WP's will be ok since they are not going to be worn all the time. I too have a higher prescription (-4 and -5) so your review was VERY informative and has helped me to make a decision to go ahead and get them with the high index lenses. And your info on frame sizes helped greatly. Hoping I have good luck with the WP's but even if they turn out to be not so great glasses, at least I will have a second pair for every so often that didn't cost a fortune.
FYI- I went to the eye doc to pick up my prescription and when asked why I told them I found a pair online and the girl says, "well, good luck with THAT." Many thanks for your kind comment. My p...Hi dainao. Many thanks for your kind comment. My prescription is pretty much the same as yours. I was concerned about the thickness of 1.67 lenses, having previously gone with 1.74. As far as clarity of vision, the 1.67 are fine; it's just a matter of weight and thickness, IMO. In fact they probably have less distortion. For me, the choice depends on the frame. If you have a an acetate/plastic frame, it will be able to hold the 1.67 lens well, typically covering the edge of the lens so that they don't appear so thick from the side (aesthetically). But if you choose a thin, metal/titanium frame or half-frame, the lens will stick out. In this case, 1.74s are probably necessary to fit within the frame securely and look okay. Frame fit will also be important. Since high index lenses are heavier than the plastic lenses that people with lower prescriptions can get, if the frame is too loose, it will slide down your nose because of the weight of the lenses. I thought it would take me a while to get used to the extra weight of 1.67 glasses since I always wore 1.74, but it hasn't been an issue. I hope this helps!Fran Baronehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09806944367760756885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3812835806784023629.post-31175029305213682312014-06-11T00:44:32.002-04:002014-06-11T00:44:32.002-04:00Thanks so much for your thorough reviews! Apologies if you've already mentioned this somewhere and I just missed it, but would you mind sharing a bit about your prescription? My eyes are in the -7 to -8 range and I'm wondering whether 1.67 high-index lenses are enough, or whether I should go up to 1.74.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3812835806784023629.post-41860667128065515072014-03-05T13:22:29.367-05:002014-03-05T13:22:29.367-05:00Hi Michael,

I got my Warby Parker glasses when they were still a relatively new company, so I can't speak for any quality decline that might have happened since then. Although I'm not that happy with the fit of my frames (and venturing into WP HQ to have them adjusted was a failure - way too crowded and impossible to breathe in there), the lenses are very clear and high quality. They are as good as, if not better than, my $800 optical store glasses. I've worn glasses since I was a kid and have never been happy with my frames because the lenses always cost upwards of $600. At that rate, I had to choose the cheapest frames (they were never "cheap") and could only ever afford one pair of glasses at a time. WP and Zenni are definitely an improvement for me.

I completely understand your philosophy on investing more in an everyday pair of glasses. I would also do the same and recommend that people have one "investment" pair. But I have to clarify the price thing. A pair of computer glasses for me would never cost $250 at a local optician. The cheapest (and ugliest, of course) pair I could find was $400 and that was with a generous discount. With Zenni, glasses in my Rx with 1.67 lenses cost a minimum of $75 for me plus shipping. It's $125 at WP and as low as $99 (I think; it's only $69 for regular index) from Mezzmer who made my favorite pair for me. The reason why I'd choose not to go with Zenni is because their return policy is poor. I've had to return a couple of pairs of glasses I got online for a replacement frame. Anything less than a no-hassle full refund is not worth bothering with. That said, if I could get my glasses for $13, I certainly would. I know people who order tons of glasses from Zenni, but then they have weak prescriptions and are not as dependent on their glasses as I am. High index lenses always cost more, which makes Zenni too big of a risk for me. The problem with Warby Parker is you're getting the same rock-bottom-quality stuff, and just paying $95 for it.

I recently ordered a spare pair of computer glasses just to try out the Warby Parker experience, and compared that against the same prescription $250 glasses from a local shop. The difference in image quality was very noticeable: with the WP lens on I had trouble reading the same size text on the screen, and the edges were blurry too. This is understandable since one of the differences between a cheap lens and a quality lens is sharpness, i.e. the optical quality of the materials.

At least for me, for a pair of glasses I'm going to wear all day, every day, and be productive at work, and extra $150 is a fair price to pay.

Michael Czeiszpergerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11635137257032997850noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3812835806784023629.post-88121825781800181592014-02-09T13:35:54.438-05:002014-02-09T13:35:54.438-05:00I recently ordered the in-home try on from dbvisio...I recently ordered the in-home try on from dbvision (RiteAidVision) and it was definitely cool to try on pairs before buying them. I am used to making the 'educated guesses' when ordering my usual pair from Zenni's online. However, i am so close to ordering a pair with digital lenses due to my issue with glare at night, but i a caught in between because i just don't understand how it can be a true digital lens without them doing special measurements and/or frame fitting to the individual. I actually haven't worn my DB frames in a while because they need an adjustment. The lenses are clear, but a bit heavier than my others, so they keep sliding down. The price is pretty much in line with other companies of this sort and of course the in-home trial is handy, so you really can't go wrong at least to begin with. Only thing is that I can't see if they still have a good returns policy on the glasses. Looking back, I am glad that I took the chance online so I could finally afford new glasses, but there are certainly some measured risks (more so for high indexes). I didn't realize that Warby Parker only goes up to -10, so thanks for letting me know. They are getting the most press and that's probably why I went for them first when I wasn't sure where to start. But there's plenty of competition. I listed the names of additional companies at the end of my latest review for Mezzmer Eyewear (My Mezzmer glasses turned out to be my favorite and most comfortable pair, btw), if that helps with your search: http://www.analogdigital.us/2013/04/mezzmer-eyewear-review.html.
